Another Dead Woman

with 7 comments

From the Sacramento Bee:

Authorities recovered the body of a 22-year-old transgender woman from the American River on Sunday.

A fisherman spotted the body about 12:45 p.m. floating in the middle of the river less than a mile southeast of the Highway 160 bridge, coroner and police officials said.

Officer Konrad Von Schoech said authorities initially thought the body was female, because of long hair, painted toenails and a smaller frame. The body was also covered in mud so it was hard to tell, he said.

On closer examination, authorities determined it was a male body, Von Schoech said.

Coroner officials have identified the person, whose last known address was in North Highlands, using fingerprints, but have not released the identity pending notification of next-of-kin.

Von Schoech said initial investigation indicates that no foul play was involved, but authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine a cause of death.

Like Nexy points out, why mention that she has a “male” body? Doesn’t she deserve dignity?

I worry that despite initial investigation that this is foul play.

By the way, don’t bother to read the comments. People are assholes.

  1. Yes, no “foul play” until the article, they mean…

And I share your suspicions, of course.

  2. Yeah, really making a big deal there of “we thought the body was female cos it had long hair, but later discovered the body was male.” Is is normal procedure when reporting a dead body to obsess about the genitalia of said body? Good grief, and you’re right of course, it’s very hard not to suspect foul play. And she was so young, too…

  3. Only when it’s trans people and especially trans women. I will say that at least they got her gender and pronouns right. Here’s hoping her birth name isn’t plastered across the news tomorrow.

  5. First – totally agree with all comments above. All in all, however, it wasn’t nearly as defamatory a comment as I would have expected. At least the Sacto Bee is usually good about pronoun usage and whatnot.

I’m from a few blocks away from North Highlands (living in SoCal now, however) – the neighborhood that they have listed as the victim’s last known address. I’m also within a year of the victim in age. Really the gender variant community isn’t that big up there… now I’m waiting on pins and needles, hoping against hope that it’s not a friend.
