Sudy Lays It Out

Sudy asks feminists to stop stealing. Since it’s not unusual for some white feminists to ignore and dismiss woc bloggers, only to use their ideas without crediting them, this is a fair demand.

Belledame also covers this in a bit more detail.

When women talk and talk and yell for months, even years, about injustices suffered by women of color and are outright ignored, dismissed, belittled, talked down to, only to see their words, their writing, echoed in another - more privileged - woman’s work, without any credit given or acknowledged, something’s seriously wrong. If you write about what women of color have to suffer, understand that one of the things women of color have had to suffer is having their words and ideas stolen, and at the very least, point to the road they’ve already traveled if you intend to walk down it yourself.

It’s not hard.

Edit: I meant to include this article much earlier, and apologies for not. Compare the article to Brownfemipower’s posts that Sudy linked.

Apologies for being less explicit than I should have been.

Brownfemipower also has a response up.

Sylvia at problemchylde makes it even clearer.

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with what X wrote, it’s just, you know, women like bfp have been talking about this for the past year, and there’s not a hint of credit given for the work they’ve done and are doing.

Edit: Sudy rightfully points out that people are linking her with reference to this incident with X, and not the historical context that this has happened over and over again, and is not an isolated incident. This isn’t about whether X needs to credit BFP or Nina Perales, but rather about whether white feminists are crediting women of color when they refer to and use WoC’s work to inform their own.

And of course, the answer is “Yes, give credit where it’s due. Don’t steal. Don’t appropriate. Don’t try to make it about you.”

Apologies to Sudy for narrowing the subject down.

    GOOD HEAVENS.

I knew she was… shall we say, to understate, *not so super* on race issues, but I didn’t realize it was THAT bad. :( WOW.

  2. belledame222 Says:

Well, it’s compounded by her being an epic narcissist, you realize.

brownfemipower took down her blog. all that’s there is an empty directory listing. i’m thinking of taking down my blog, in solidarity. you know, like a day of silence thing. only it would be the blog of silence. or something.

  8. belledame222 Says:

Nexy, honestly I think better would be to write more, not less. I respect her decision or anyone else’s to delete their work, but personally I think it ultimately ends up being a Pyrrhic victory at best, in general, nuking I mean.

  9. Ethyl Says:

Holy crap. Ok, I’m finally caught up on all of this, and have even read through all 300 some odd comments at Feministe, and just. Holy crap. Just. Yeah. Keep singing “it’s an Amanda-centric world” to the tune of “its a small world” in my head. I can’t believe someone could be so clueless and self-centered. Yeesh.

You know what one of my pet peeves is? “Oh stop overreacting, you shouldn’t be mad about this silly little thing!” Nobody should get to tell anyone else what they should or shouldn’t be mad about, and I saw that all over what AM and her defenders were saying. That shit pisses me right off.

  10. Lisa Harney Says:

Yeah, it’s the tone argument - or what Nezua calls the drowning maestro. “I’d pay attention to your issues or complaints, but your tone isn’t right.”

On the other hand, it’s perfectly okay for X to constantly characterize everyone criticizing her as being out to destroy her career, as targeting her specifically, as if there’s not a history here that’s about more than her. She gets to be sensitive and have feelings, and the women whose work she appropriated don’t have the luxury of either - at least not in her eyes, or the eyes of her supporters. :(

  11. belledame222 Says:

Well, as you note: it’s Amanda’s world, we all just dwell in it (more or less).

This is honestly what sends me around the bend with these people: the disconnect, okay.

    A: MEMEMEMEME!

    B: …but, x, y, z, other people, you know…

    A: ME! MEMEMEMEMEMEME!! ME!!

D: yes, we HEARD you, but there’s also THIS, and…

    A: ME. lalalalalala. ME. nyah.

B: well, fine, fuck you then.

    A: WAAAHHHH!!! HURTING MEMEMEMEMEMEMEME!!!….

  12. belledame222 Says:

oh yeah, and she specifically threw the charge of “making up lies,” you know, it’s totally fine to sling the worst possible motives at a nebulous and shifting THEM. which may or may not include bfp, who’s totally being punished in that AM will NEVER READ HER AGAIN, which well, yeah, you know, cuz she took the blog down? but it’s the thought that counts. on the other hand, poor bfp, a “decent writer” (!!) was dragged into it by “fucking mean bullies” like me and my “cadre,” because, you know, she totally wouldn’t have thought to get mad on her own or anything.

also, she can’t possibly be expected to take an interest in anyone or anything else until people abase themselves for even THINKING of (in her mind) -ruining- her -career-.

I feel there should be buttons for this Mean Girls club you’ve put together belle. Something.

  14. missnomered Says:

Ouch. Well, I’m really glad she was called out on it. Sucks that brownfemipower took her blog down, though. I hope she brings it back, it’s too good to be defeated by plagiarism and blog drama.

And Amanda’s going on about how she was done wrong? Jesus Christ. The least she could do is apologize.

    facepalm.

(P.S. I used to comment on here as Lindsay, now I have my own blog. I gave you some link love!)

  15. Ethyl Says:

Belldame — word. And, anyone who calls BFP only “decent” has their head up their ass.

And even though I was late to the party, can I get a “Mean Girls” button too? I would so rock that. I could put up an angry post at my blog…I mean, nobody reads it, but you know. I’m laid off, I got nothing better to do :D

  16. Ethyl Says:

PS — not to get off topic, but what happened to ballastexistenz? I keep getting weird error pages.
